Chiara String Quartet announces farewell season

The Chiara String Quartet, artists-in-residence at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Glenn Korff School of Music, announced today that 2017-18 will be its final concert season. 

The group will finish performing together full time in September 2018 and characterizes its decision as one made "in a spirit of tremendous gratitude and love."

In its 18th overall season, the Chiara String Quartet has been in residence at the Korff School since 2004. Members will continue as faculty in the Korff School through the 2018-19 academic year.

Korff School doctoral student wins Golden Classical Music Awards International Competition in piano

Lincoln, Neb.--Yanbing Dong, a Doctor of Musical Arts student in the Glenn Korff School of Music, won the Golden Classical Music Awards International Competition in piano (senior division) and will be performing in New York City at Carnegie Hall on Nov. 4.

“I was simply thrilled after I learned the news through e-mail, but immediately realized the importance of the upcoming performance in New York City,” Dong said. “This will be my solo debut at Carnegie Hall. I think performing at Carnegie Hall is, undoubtedly, a momentous event, and I feel very privileged to be a part of it.”

Big Red Singers exhibition coming Saturday, August 19

LINCOLN, Neb.— The 2017-2018 Big Red Singers will make its debut in Kimball Recital Hall by performing select titles of recent Nebraska Show Choir Camp songs on Saturday, August 19 at 7:30 p.m.

The exhibition is a high-energy performance of singing and expert choreography that will conclude a week of rehearsals. The concert is free and open to the public, but patrons are advised to come early to get the best seats. It will be a performance to remember!

Johnson, Adrenaline victorious at Rising Star competition

Jadyn Johnson is a Barberbrat. The senior Music Education major at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Glenn Korff School of Music is a third generation barbershopper as her grandpa got her family into singing barbershop.

This past weekend, Johnson, along with three other members of her quartet, Adrenaline, won the 2017 Rising Star Competition (the International Youth Division). The Rising Star competition is part of the Sweet Adelines International Quartet Contest that took place August 5 at the University of Maryland, College Park, Md.

Cornhusker Marching Band takes over Memorial Stadium

LINCOLN, Neb.— The Cornhusker Marching Band’s annual exhibition performance will take place Friday, August 18 at 7 p.m. in Memorial Stadium on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus.

You'll see highlights of what the Cornhusker Marching Band has been working on during its pre-season Band Camp, including the famous "drill down," a preview of the first halftime show and hear many more Husker favorites.

Johnson placing first highlights GKSOM success at NATS National Student Auditions

Recent University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Glenn Korff School of Music graduate Kathleen (Kate) Johnson won the Upper College (Junior and Seniors) Women’s Classical Vocal category at the NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing) 2017 National Student Auditions (NSA) in Boulder, Colorado on Friday. Johnson was a student of Kate Butler at Nebraska. 

Current student Tyler Cox was the third-place winner in the Lower College (Freshmen and Sophomore) Men’s Musical Theatre category. Cox is a student of Alisa Belflower.

Fiske Guide tabs Nebraska as 'Best Buy' university

Lincoln, Neb.--The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has been designated a "Best Buy" in the Fiske Guide to Colleges 2018.

Nebraska is one of just 20 public colleges and universities to receive the designation, which is earned through academic quality and affordability. Eighteen private institutions were also named to this year's list.

The Fiske Guide, founded in 1982 by Edward Fiske, a former New York Times education editor, is a highly respected, comprehensive guide to more than 300 colleges and universities.

Benesch earns honorable mention at Orfeo Music Festival in Italy

Lincoln, Neb.--Krista Benesch, a sophomore B.M.E. student in the Glenn Korff School of Music from Kearney, Nebraska, won honorable mention in the 2017 Orfeo Music Festival international competition in Vipiteno/Sterzing, Italy.

Larson’s Our Fathers to have World Premiere at Meadowlark Music Festival

Difficult times can create a bonding experience. It’s not that Tom Larson, Hans Strum and Chris Varga didn’t already have a strong friendship but the death of all of their fathers within a six-month period in 2013-14 solidified it.

And out of that time period came, Our Fathers, a piece by Larson, which was commissioned by the Meadowlark Music Festival. It will have its world premiere on Friday, July 14 at 7 p.m. in Kimball Recital Hall on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus as part of the festival. Tickets are available.

A long-time voice of the Cornhusker Marching Band, Michael Veak, passed away on June 15. His last season as the voice of the Pride of All Nebraska was 2002.
