Professional experiences enhance student learning
Lincoln, Neb.--Usually college students can only receive professional experience through internships or after they receive their degree. The Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film is giving students the opportunity to work side by their professors on a variety of theatre jobs. One such person would be assistant professor of scene design J.D. Madsen.

UNL MFA students featured in new Lincoln gallery
Lincoln, Neb.-- The inaugural exhibiton for Lincoln's new Prescott Gallery is "Material Presence: Selections from the UNL MFA Program" and features a selection of artwork by University of Nebraska–Lincoln Master of Fine Arts graduate students. The exhibition showcases a variety of material investigations from the hand-worked to the digital by artists chosen as representative of the areas of concentration in the UNL MFA program. Each work in the show draws attention to materiality through form, subject, process, and – quite literally – the material used.

'Nebraska's Best' Exhibition opens Nov. 7
“Nebraska’s Best: High School Artists from Lincoln and Omaha” opens Nov. 7 and continues through Nov. 18 at the Department of Art and Art History’s Eisentrager-Howard Gallery in Richards Hall on the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s city campus.
A First Friday Reception will be held on Friday, Nov. 7 from 6-8 p.m. with the awards of merit being announced at 7 p.m.
Gallery hours are Monday-Friday, 12:30-4:30 p.m. Admission to the gallery is free and open to the public

Chiara String Quartet part of Internet2 Day at Nebraska Nov. 13
A long-distance musical rehearsal and UNL's participation in the Large Hadron Collider project will highlight a first-ever “Internet2 Day at Nebraska.”The daylong event is Nov. 13 at Nebraska Innovation Campus and will feature technology innovations that enable advancing research and education. The event is open to faculty and staff. Reservations for the lunch are required.

LINCOLN, Neb.— The University of Nebraska–Lincoln Faculty Jazz Ensemble performance will be November 12 in the Westbrook Music Building Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. The performance is free and open to the public.

Filmmaker Jon Jost returns to the Ross Nov. 7-13
Lincoln, Neb.--In 2007, radical filmmaker Jon Jost came to Lincoln to make movies. He had visited earlier in 1974 as the second filmmaker to participate in the Sheldon Film Showcase (now known as the Norman A. Geske Cinema Showcase).The recipient of an Artist-in-Residence grant co-sponsored by the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center and the University of Nebraska’s Arts Are Basic Program, Jost wound up making two feature films and a visual installation expressing cultural and geographical nuances of life in the Midwest.

Visiting Artist Dean Dass to lecture Nov. 5
Lincoln, Neb.—Visiting Artist Dean Dass, professor of printmaking from the University of Virginia’s McIntire Department of Art, will present a free public lecture on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 5:30 p.m. in Richards Hall Rm. 15. A reception and demonstration will follow the lecture in Woods Art Building Rm. 303, hosted by the Under Pressure Print Club.
Dass will be visiting the UNL Department of Art and Art History Nov. 3-7.

Visiting Artist Betsy Schneider to lecture Oct. 30
Lincoln, Neb.--Betsy Schneider, a photo-based artist and educator, will present a free public lecture on Thursday, Oct. 30 at 5:30 p.m. in Richards Hall Rm. 14. The lecture is free and open to the public.Schneider's artistic concerns range from trying to understand time, decay and the body, to exploring childhood, culture, and relationships and looking very closely at strange visceral things such as candy, placentas and the mouth. She uses a variety of photographic tools including APS, digital, medium format and view cameras and digital and computer generated video.

Daily's composition a finalist for Van Galen Composition Prize
The composition “Brass Quintet" by Glenn Korff School of Music Lecturer Nels Drue Daily will be performed by the River Falls Brass on Oct. 26.His composition is one of only 10 pieces chosen as Finalists out of 77 submissions from composers from eight countries for the Van Galen Composition Prize.
The Van Galen Composition Prize is unique as the audience members will vote for the winning composition after all ten pieces are performed in a public concert at Abbott Hall in River Falls. This is uncommon as usually a panel of composers vote for composition prizes.

Sturm to receive two awards from the International Rabbath Institute
Hans Sturm, associate professor of double bass and jazz studies and area head for strings, will be traveling to Paris in December to receive two international awards from the International Rabbath Institute, one for teaching and one for performing.Sturm will receive the Prize and Diploma for Performance Excellence and the Prize and Diploma of Professor from the institute, which is founded by noted bassist François Rabbath.
