Theatrix opens "Gruesome Playground Injuries"

Theatrix, the student-operated theatre organization at the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film, will mount Rajiv Joseph’s "Gruesome Playground Injuries," directed by undergraduate acting major Billy Jones. Performances are March 7-9 at 7:30 p.m. and on March 10 at 2:00 p.m. in the Lab Theatre located on the 3rd floor of the Temple Building, 12th and R streets.

IAS opens "Ancient World Through Modern Eyes"

The Interdisciplinary Arts Symposium’s fourth season explores “Ancient World Through Modern Eyes” this semester. IAS is a theme-based, public performance series with artists in residence, a seminar for UNL students, public lectures to complement the performances and a book series, published by the University of Nebraska Press.

Founded and directed by Professor Rhonda Garelick, IAS places the performing arts in a broader, more meaningful context, creates a diverse audience for performances and brings world-class performance and scholarship to UNL and Lincoln.

Friends of Opera funds Ariel Bybee Endowment

A recent contribution by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Friends of Opera group to the University of Nebraska Foundation has completed funding for the $200,000 Ariel Bybee Visiting Professorship Endowed Fund.

The Ariel Bybee Visiting Professorship Endowed Fund will sponsor visiting opera composers, opera directors and opera coaches to come to UNL from across the country and around the world as Ariel Bybee Visiting Professors.

Young Artist Award winners announced

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts has announced the winners of the 16th annual Nebraska Young Artist awards.

The Nebraska Young Artist Awards annually recognize 11th-grade students from Nebraska who are gifted and talented in the areas of visual art, dance, music, theatre, and film and new media. These students exemplify the pinnacles of creativity in one of the fine and performing arts.

New libretto of "Candide" given regional premiere

The UNL School of Music and the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film present the regional premiere of Mary Zimmerman’s adaptation of "Candide," Leonard Bernstein’s 1956 operetta. Performances are February 21, 22 and 23 at 7:30 p.m. and February 24 at 3:00 p.m. in Kimball Recital Hall, 11th and Q streets.

New Musical Theatre Festival to be held at Lied Center

The Lied Center for Performing Arts has announced a musical theatre festival to seek out new musical theatre works from across the United States with the potential to be developed and produced into full-scale productions. Directed by Tony® Award nominees Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin, this festival will bring some of the finest emerging musical theatre writers to the Lied Center next fall.

Freshman clarinetist wins division MTNA competition

Hattie Bestul, a University of Nebraska–Lincoln freshman Bachelor of Music major from Middleton, Wis., is the Division Winner in the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Senior Performance Competition (Woodwinds) in Lawrence, Ks.. She will travel to Anaheim, Calif., in March to compete as a National Finalist in the MTNA Senior Performance Competition (Woodwinds).

UNL to host regional Kennedy Center theatre festival

The Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film will be hosting more than 1,500 students and faculty from more than 70 colleges and universities from around the region at the Region V Kennedy Center/American College Theater Festival (KCACTF) Jan. 20-26, 2013, in Lincoln. It’s their first time hosting the festival in about 10 years.

Region V covers North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota and Iowa. UNL will be hosting the Region V festival in both 2013 and 2014.
