Now enrolling adult students for piano class
To all the adults out there who have always wanted to play the piano, UNL professor Brenda Wristen has something to say: It’s never too late to learn.
With people living longer and having more leisure time, Wristen sees adults as good candidates to learn to play the piano. This class offers the opportunity to learn how to play the piano in a fun, low-key environment.

Marks to present Bach works on five keyboards
University of Nebraska–Lincoln Associate Professor of Organ Christopher Marks will perform the music of Johann Sebastian Bach on five different keyboard instruments during his faculty recital on Sunday, Jan. 13 at 3 p.m. in Kimball Recital Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

SOM student finalist at National Opera competition
University of Nebraska–Lincoln School of Music graduate student Kayla Wilkens finished as one of eight finalists in the National Opera Association’s 2013 Vocal Competition in the scholarship division. The finals were conducted Jan. 5, 2013, in Portland, Ore.
“I was very pleased and honored to be chosen as a national finalist—only a handful of applicants are chosen to proceed to the final stage of the competition,” Wilkens said.

Olson gift to enhance vocal music education
University of Nebraska–Lincoln School of Music Director John W. Richmond announced a $100,000 gift to the University of Nebraska Foundation by Thomas Olson in honor of his wife, Cynthia, to create the Cynthia Olson Vocal Music Education Doctoral Fellowship Endowment at the Chamber Music Singers concert at Sheldon Museum of Art on Dec. 7.

Lewis presents next Geske Lecture on Johnson
Architectural historian Hilary Lewis will present the next Geske Lecture titled “Philip Johnson: The Art of Architecture” on Tuesday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. in Sheldon Museum of Art’s Ethel S. Abbott Auditorium. The lecture is free and open to the public. A free reception will follow the lecture in the Great Hall.
Johnson designed the Sheldon Museum of Art, which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2013.
Lewis said Johnson always saw architecture through the lens of art.

Music freshman wins Lincoln's Symphony competition
Freshman saxophone performance major Nicholas May was announced as the winner of the Lincoln's Symphony Orchestra Young Artist Competition on Nov. 17.
As the winner, May receives the title of LSO Young Artist Winner for the 2012-2013 season, publicity exposure, a private rehearsal and coaching from LSO Resident Conductor and UNL Professor Tyler White and two featured performances as a soloist with the orchestra at LSO’s Young People’s Concert at the Lied Center and family concert at Nebraska Wesleyan’s O’Donnell Auditorium, as well as a $500 cash prize.

Haar named Midwest director for Jazz Ed Network
University of Nebraska–Lincoln Associate Professor of Saxophone and Coordinator of Jazz Studies Paul Haar has been selected to be the Midwest Division Director for the Jazz Education Network (JEN).
Haar’s responsibilities will be to serve as a coordinator/liaison between JEN and Midwest directors and educators in Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Colorado, North Dakota and South Dakota.

BFA Capstone Exhibition showing Dec. 7-14
The Department of Art and Art History presents the work of this semester's graduating seniors in the BFA Capstone Exhibition Dec. 7-14 in the Eisentrager-Howard Gallery in Richards Hall.
A closing reception will be held on Friday, Dec. 14 from 5-7 p.m. in the Gallery, which is located on the first floor of Richards Hall at Stadium Drive and T streets on the UNL city campus. Gallery hours for the exhibition are Monday-Thursday 12:30-4:30 p.m. and Friday from 12:30-7 p.m. Gallery admission is free and open to the public.

Art department seeks Book Art Exhibition entries
Graduate and undergraduate students in accredited academic institutions may submit books for “Heart & Hands 2013,” the fourth national juried book art exhibition for students.
Books made in book arts, graphic design, photography, printmaking and writing courses will be featured in the exhibition. Books completed between Jan. 1, 2011, and March 1, 2013, are eligible.

Cornhusker Marching Band highlights concert
The Cornhusker Marching Band presents its annual Highlights Concert on Friday, Dec. 7 at 7:30 p.m. in Pershing Center.
Tickets are $15 general admission and $10 for students/seniors and are available from the Pershing Center Box Office at (402) 441-7766 or through Ticketmaster (additional Ticketmaster fees apply). Pershing Center is located at 226 Centennial Mall South in downtown Lincoln.
The band will present the music performed at each of their halftime shows, in addition to their pre-game music.
